June 2025

Tintoretto’s monumental canvases of The Last Supper and The Israelites in the Desert, thanks to the the generous support of the The Stracke Family and with the collaboration of the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore – Benedicti Claustra Onlus.

Completed with the assistance of his son Domenico just before Jacopo’s death in 1594, these powerful works for the side walls of the presbytery stand among his final masterpieces. They have been relocated to a temporary laboratory in the Abbey’s sacristy, where visitors can observe conservators from the CBC Conservazione Beni Culturali firm as they remove darkened oxidized varnish and discolored inpainting from previous interventions. Each phase of treatment is also being documented by videographers from Maco Film, and this behind-the-scenes footage is displayed in the church, as well as through Save Venice’s YouTube channel.
